Airsoft hop-up bucking: hardness, power, temperature & compatibility (technical guide)

The Hop-Up Bucking is a small rubber part placed inside the Hop-up chamber at the end of your barrel, which creates what is known as the hop-up effect. This component is ideal for improving the range, power, and trajectory of your Airsoft replicas. This bucking can wear out and deform over time, making your replica less efficient and accurate, which is why it needs to be replaced.

What are the 2 types of hop-up buckings? (standard vs flat)

Type 1 – Standard bucking: The most common. Suitable for most AEG and GBB. Easy to install.

Type 2 – Flat bucking (flat-hop): Larger contact surface on the BB. Ideal for long distances (+15% range typically). Requires adjustment of the pressure arm.

Frequently asked questions about hop-up buckings

👉 Can a 70° bucking be used on a 1J AEG?
Yes, but you will lose some precision as the bucking will be too stiff to properly grip the BB at that power. For AEGs between 0.8 and 1.3 J, 60° is the best compromise between precision and durability.

👉 Does silicone damage hop-up buckings?
Excess silicone spray can cause some NBR buckings to swell by +5 to 10%, which can block hop-up rotation. Golden rule: nothing inside the hop-up bucking. Light lubrication on the outside of the hop-up unit is sufficient.

👉 Which hop-up bucking brand should I choose at Univairsoft?

👉 Which hop-up bucking for a GBB in winter?
Below 5°C, choose at least a 70° Shore A bucking. Soft buckings (50°–60°) swell in cold and humidity, causing range loss and repeated jams. The Maple Leaf 70° is the most commonly used in workshops for winter use.

👉 What is the difference between an AEG and GBB hop-up bucking?
The internal diameter is identical (6.03 mm), but the external shape and thickness vary depending on manufacturers. An AEG bucking installed in a GBB chamber may seal poorly and cause air leaks. Always check compatibility before purchase.

👉 How long does a hop-up bucking last before needing replacement?
A 60° bucking on a 1 J AEG lasts between 50,000 and 80,000 BBs under normal conditions. A bucking that is too soft for the power used can tear in less than 5,000 BBs. Poorly calibrated BBs (tolerance > 0.02 mm) and excessive lubrication are the main causes of accelerated wear.

👉 Can you use a flat-hop bucking without modifying the hop-up arm?
No. A flat-hop bucking requires a flat arm (flat nub) to apply proper pressure. With a standard rounded arm, pressure remains concentrated on one point and performance gains are lost. Replacing the arm is essential.

👉 What hardness hop-up bucking for an airsoft sniper?
Between 1.5 and 2 J, use a 70° to 80° Shore A bucking. Below 70°, the bucking tears quickly under pressure. For builds exceeding 2 J with HPA, an 80° bucking or R-hop is recommended. The hop-up arm must be metal at these power levels.
